For My Birthday, I Share Reflections On Hope & Gratitude During the Most Challenging of Times

In the week leading up to my birthday, I was fortunate to spend time with family. It’s a good thing we pre-celebrated because today, on my actual birthday, things are much different – thanks to COVID. Several loved ones I spent time with are now sick and, because I was exposed, I’m spending a lot of time alone when not caring for them.

I’ve been using this quiet time to reflect on the last year of my life, and on the new year ahead. I started the day by meditating in my garden, setting worries aside and concentrating on the here and now. With golden leaves falling around me in the 34-degree sunshine, I pushed past my pain and sadness – and instead felt the hope and gratitude of knowing:

There will always be challenges, chaos and fire. So, we must strive to be motivated, empathetic and resilient.

There will always be conflict, struggle and pain. So, we must strive to be advocates, peacemakers and helpers.

There will always be negative energy and people with bad intent. So, we must strive to counteract them with positive energy and goodwill.

There will always be doubt and fear. So, we must strive to be confident and courageous.

There will always be reasons not to do or celebrate something. But we can’t allow challenging situations or people to steal our joy or make us feel like we shouldn’t do it or don’t deserve it. We must strive to combine our passion with our purpose.

Don’t wait to celebrate YOU. Tomorrow isn’t promised. All we have is this moment, right now.

My birthday wish is that, during these most difficult of times, we continue to grow and stretch ourselves in ways that can feel uncomfortable but are necessary to keep learning and evolving. That growth mindset will help us overcome any fear or obstacles that stand in the way of our ability to live the lives we dream of – the lives we deserve.
