Be True to Your Creative Spirit & Cultivate a Maker Mindset to Achieve More Success

A maker is someone who uses their imagination to picture an outcome or a solution – a design, product, service, business or charity the world needs. But a maker is someone who does more than just imagine. A maker moves from dreaming to doing. A maker actually makes things happen.

Kim Oster-Holstein has been making things happen for decades. Kim is the founder of Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels, a beloved snack food brand sold in national grocery chains like Costco, Walmart, Kroger and Whole Foods – and even on QVC to 90 million households. After selling the business to J&J Snack Foods, a $1 billion food company, Kim and Scott (her business partner who is also her husband) later founded Twisted Alchemy, a company that creates amazing fresh-squeezed juices.

“There’s nothing more exciting than building something out of nothing,” Kim says. “Building our business is a labor of love.”

Having a maker mindset is key. The mindset of a maker is innovative and entrepreneurial, with an underlying core of creativity. That creativity is what fuels makers to succeed. Makers are resilient and resourceful, and what they don’t know, they figure out. They are curious problem solvers who are willing to put themselves out there to create something new or better. And that’s Kim’s specialty.

I’m honored that Kim shared her inspiring story in my new book, Become the Fire: Transform Life’s Chaos into Business and Personal Success. As the featured “Flame” in the chapter on being a maker, Kim explains how she left the corporate world to embark on her entrepreneurial journey. She shares many insights learned from her experiences on the road to becoming a successful business owner, to encourage women from all walks of life to achieve their own success.

Kim attributes her success to living her mission and creating from a place of authenticity. “If you build your business with purpose and intention, it will have more fuel to grow,” Kim says. “Success lies at being true to your creative spirit, bringing ideas to life with joy, enthusiasm, vision and love.”

You can read more about Kim, and get many more of her insights, by ordering your copy of Become the Fire (foreword by Mary Dillon, former CEO of Ulta Beauty, current CEO of Foot Locker) for yourself or for someone you think may benefit from the stories and lessons shared by her and this diverse group of highly successful leaders:
