“Become the Fire” Goes Global: How Our Message Is Having An Impact Around the World

“Become the Fire” has gone global. During her recent visit to South Korea, Foot Locker CEO Mary Dillon was asked to sign a copy of Become the Fire, for which she wrote the Foreword

While meeting with her team in Seoul, a Foot Locker associate approached Mary with a copy of the book. Mary not only signed the book, but also took a photo in order to share the global reach and impact the book is having. To know that the book’s message is making a difference in the lives of women around the world is a dream fulfilled for me.

Most of you know who Mary Dillon is and why she’s such a rock star. But for those of you who don’t, let me share a bit about what makes Mary so amazing. She’s not only the CEO of Foot Locker and the former CEO of Ulta Beauty, she’s also an angel investor in my company, 30Seconds.com. She recently made history by becoming only the third woman to ever run two Fortune 500 companies (currently, just 52 companies out of 500 are led by female CEOs).

A self-made success story, Mary worked her way through college then rose through the ranks at PepsiCo and McDonald’s before landing her first CEO job at UScellular. Then, as CEO of Ulta Beauty, she catapulted its growth while building a culture of respect and diversity. Now, at Foot Locker, she is reinvigorating the brand and positioning it for massive digital expansion. Mary’s leadership serves as constant inspiration to me and many others.

With Mary as a role model, I’m constantly reminded that being a CEO is not just about wrangling numbers on a spreadsheet or managing marketplace disruptions. Being a CEO is about people. Good leaders know how to engage their employees and motivate their teams, which is why great CEOs put their people first and provide runway for them to grow.

The best CEOs empower others to reach the next rung on the ladder, and that’s what leadership (and Become the Fire) is all about. Thank you, Mary, for blazing the trail and inspiring us all. 🔥
